Positioning at the Piano

1.   General Position at the Piano
        
a)  Height:  Elbow level with piano frame just in front of keys. (wrist flat)
        
b)  Distance:  Elbow slightly in front of body. (knuckles to fallboard)

2.  Position of Hand and Arm
        a)  Hand in straight line with forearm. (wrist flat)
        
b)  Fingers curved and hand arched, knuckles highest. (hand rounded)
        c)  Nail joints firm and vertiical. (on tips)
        d)  Back of hand level across knuckle. (pinkie bent)
        e)  Thumb joint in line with key.

3.  Condition of Hand and Arm
        
a)  Shoulders relaxed.
        b)  Weight of arm supported at wrist just enough to maintain position.

4.  Common Faults
        
a)  Yielding of nail joints. (bending backward)
        
b)  Straightening of fingers when lifted. (pointing)
        c)  Curling of fingers under palm. (scrunching)
        d)  Dragging unoccupied fingers on keys. (sticking)
        
e)  Jerking wrist at every note. (bouncing)
